The ‘IJdijkenroute’ is a renowned 36 km tour through the IJdijken area – a system of dikes in Noord-Holland protecting the region from storms and flooding.

The route is clearly marked by boards, also displaying QR-codes that can be used with smartphones to unlock information about the history of the area and landscape. As well as text, the mobile website also presents historic images of the area around you.

The route begins in Amsterdam, travelling via Halfweg, Spaarndam and Spaarnwoude, before finally ending at Pontplein in IJmuiden. It’s also possible to begin in IJmuiden and travel towards Amsterdam.
